APDS9960

Created Thursday 09 November 2023

APDS9960 gesture sensor can be used to measure speed and angle of hand motion. It can be used with Arduino, STM32, Raspberry Pi and other I2C capable devices. It was used in Samsung Galaxy S5 for RGB Light, Proximity and Gesture sensing.

Unlike Google's Pixel 4 radar-based Soli sensor, APDS9960 utilizes four directional photodiodes to sense reflected infrared energy (sourced by the integrated LED) to convert physical motion information (i.e. velocity, direction and distance) to a digital information.

It is not as powerful as infrared stereo camera of Leap Motion, but it consumes less power and provides high frame rate data over low bandwidth I2C interface.
